BUSHBUCKRIDGE
MPUMALANGA
APRIL 2014
Our Partners, Optima CVC, in September 2013, saw the Principal Veterinary Surgeon and her team of volunteers, upon returning from India, as a volunteer for World Wide Veterinary Services and their Mission Rabies Vaccination Campaign, Dr Renee Van Rheede Van Oudtshoorn , inspired by the amazing work, Luke Gamble and his team does, start the journey of combating rabies in South Africa.

She immediately contacted Dr Johan Kotze, Chairperson of the South African Rabies Advisory Board, to request information on where in South Africa she can lend a hand in the fight against rabies. Dr Johan Kotze identified Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, as an area desperately needing help.

With the primary sponsor Welttierschutzgesellschafte.V. and with the help of Southern African Wild Life Training College, Kendon Medical Supplies, Merial Pharmaceuticals, Zoetis, F10 Animal Health, Adcock Ingram, Purina, Pick n Pay, Diag Import and Export , Optima Feeds and Vet Shops, Marltons Pet Products and the already active Optima Community Veterinary Cinic of Dr Reneee, the dream started taking shape.

Dr Renee Van Rheede Van Oudtshoorn, Principal Vet of Optima Community Veterinary Clinic, a South African Veterinary Association Community Veterinary Clinic NGO, approached friend and colleague, Dr Dagmar Mayer, to share in this awesome journey in South Africa.
During our time working in Onverwacht we realised that a lady by the name of Anna was trying to start a crèche but she did not have the resources. So we started organising and got Premier Diamond Mine in Cullinan on board. They provided all the required materials and skilled labour while EcoLife Expeditions supplied the students who did all the unskilled labour.

BUBYE
MARCH 2015
Our long term partners, Optima Community Veterinary Clinic held a rabies prevention campaign in the Bubye conservancy, Zimbabwe, on the South African border. 1000 dogs vaccinated in 5 days . The team worked long hours in this vast rural area where a lion was tested positive for rabies end last year. Rabies is 100% fatal, but 100 % preventable if your animals are vaccinated.

Our Partners ,Optima CVC, has just completed a week long rabies vaccination campaign
in the Beitbridge rural district area of Zimbabwe. Our assistance was requested in this
area, after a lion tested positive for rabies recently and had to be euthanized.
In our bid to assist this vast rural area, its people and their animals, we donated 1000
rabies vaccinations, the equipment needed to administer them, educational leaflets and
vaccination certificates.

May 2016
Outsourced by NSPCA, our team was honoured to be asked to organise and execute mass sterilisations in 5 days with 2 vets. Our Partners, Optima CVC Surgical Team did us proud, as usual, and managed over 350 sterilisations!

Dr. Reneè van Rheede van Oudtshoorn, Stef van Rheede van Oudtshoorn, Ets & Jenni Putter, Sr Christine Howell, Ed & Carl Slade and Joe Adlem as the core of the Optima CVC Team, with the fantastic NSPCA and Local Eastern Cape SPCA, pulled together and made it happen!
By the final afternoon, our SPCA pick up vans could not find any more unsterilized animals to be done!

Our team utilised the opportunity to continue their humane education in showing owners basic pet care skills like how to carry their pet gently and how to keep it warm post surgery. We also had the opportunity to guide and teach young vets as well as local scholars and to encourage them to follow careers in science.
Well done team, long exhausting days of 10 hours plus nonstop surgery, was hard, but worth it!

Another fantastic example how NGO's, NSPCA, SPCA, State Veterinary Services and as well as Optima CVC MAKE THE DIFFERENCE by working together!
Thank you to CVS - SA , CNCZ, Optima CVC and SV Zimbabwe for yet another successful Rabies Campaign. Sad to experience first hand how people are still dying in the remote areas of Zimbabwe from Rabies which we can 100% prevent with vaccination. Thank you to Claire Blackmore and Dr Cain and Mr Sibanda for making this project a true life saver!

Sponsored by www.welttierschutz.org 146 Sterilisation in 3 days ...as well as 550 Rabies vaccinations. Among stressors of riots and burnt down infrastructure and trashed "theater", days before the project was due to kick off, the community pulled together and delivered a great project. Well done to our Vet, Dr Renee Van Rheede Van Oudtshoorn, AWA's Cherie Ziervogel,Jen en Ets Putter, Student Jade Hilton and all the assistance from Kuruman Animal Welfare and their supporters as well as State Veterinary Services for lending hands to help vaccinate.
